Paolo Scheggi (Florence, 1940) studied at the State Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1960, he founded the art and literature magazine Il malinteso, presented by Jean Paul Sartre, and began to explore plastic language, producing his first works in sheet iron, which were exhibited for the first time at the Galleria Numero in Florence. In 1961, he moved to Milan, where he came into contact with Agnetti, Bonalumi, Castellani, Dadamaino and other Italian avant-garde artists.
His first solo exhibition, “Itinerario plastico prestabilito” (Pre-established Plastic Itinerary), was held in 1961 at the Galleria della Vigna Nuova in Florence. This was followed by his participation in the San Fedele Prize in Milan in 1962, an exhibition at the Il Fiore gallery in Florence, together with Dorazio, Fontana Hartung, Klein, Manzoni and Pomodoro, and solo exhibitions at the Galleria del Deposito in Genoa in 1964, the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice in 1965, Galleria L'Obelisco in Rome in 1965 and Galleria del Naviglio in Milan in 1967. 
In 1964, he participated in the XIII Triennale in Milan with a Euro-chrome-spatial composer project for the experimental cinema hall curated by Bruno Munari. In 1965, he began participating in European and American exhibitions, such as the Nul=zero exhibition at the Orez Gallery in Amsterdam; Nouvelle Tendance 3 at the Galerija Suvremene Umjetnesti in Zagreb; Art Rental, Museum of Modern Art in New York; XXI Salon de realitées nouvelles at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, 1966, and many others.
In 1966, he participated in the Venice Biennale for the first time, and he would return in 1972, 1976 and 1986.
