Anu Põder (1947-2013) was one of the most fascinating artists in contemporary Estonian sculpture and installation art. Beginning her career in the 1970s, her work dealt mainly with family life, internal struggles, and the emotional sphere framed by the constricting norms and taboos of the Soviet regime.
Through Anu Põder's artistic stance we can clearly see the effect that social development has on an individual's life and options, how each person has become someone else's context. Põder used ephemeral materials: fabric, wax, plaster, soap, plastic and wood, and used herself as the measure of her works. Her works even age like people: they change color, deform, and disintegrate, but their initial fragility becomes more and more evident and vivid as time passes, offering new possibilities for interpreting Estonia's entire recent history.
