The following year he became director of the drawing department at the same academy and was appointed professor in 1928. During this period he was much more active as a draughtsman than as a painter. In 1925, he exhibited several drawings and prints, as well as his oil painting 'The Classroom', in the seminal exhibition 'Neue Sachlichkeit' ('New Objectivity') at the Mannheim Kunsthalle. In 1933, Hubbuch, due to his clear anti-fascist stance, was dismissed from teaching and banned from painting by the Nazi authorities.
