The Acrobatic Kiosk for the EXPOSED Torino Photo Festival
The Acrobatic Kiosk
Is it a kiosk or a circus? A circus or a kiosk? Neither... it's an acrobatic kiosk!
As part of the Exposed Torino Photo Festival and Paolo Ventura's exhibition Acrobati, 2020–2025, set up under the arcades of Piazza San Carlo, the kiosk transforms as if in an acrobatic feat, and its structure is once again filled with printed paper arranged in the original display cases.
Both the circus and the kiosk were powerful symbols of the century just past. The circus was one of the most popular and iconic forms of entertainment in the 20th century, and it greatly influenced the imagination of artist Paolo Ventura. The newsstand has been among the symbolic landmarks of urban furniture and the architectural evolution of cities from the late 19th century onward. A small space where life, information, high and low culture, trading cards, and postcards were skillfully blended by the newsagent.
The acrobatic kiosk, featuring a camouflage technique similar to many the artist has employed over the years, is curated by Libreria Marini and engages with Paolo Ventura's world—rooted in early-twentieth-century atmospheres yet simultaneously eluding any fixed definition of space and time. A wide selection of the artist's books and more—original photographs, ephemera, volumes, and 20th-century magazines—accompanies his dreams, fantasies, suspended stories, and colorful tales in a joyful whirlwind.
In addition, an original poster created in collaboration with the artist has been produced for the occasion and will be available at the kiosk.
