In January 1968, a strong earthquake hit the Belice Valley, destroying some of its villages. It was the strongest earthquake in republican Italy and no one knew how to handle the emergency. The State's response was insufficient and, also due to a confusing reconstruction, the towns in the area today find themselves in a situation of underused housing stock and lack of industrial development. True cathedrals in the desert, those places were photographed and the images were collected and compared with those taken by the photoreporters of the newspaper ‘L'Ora' in 1968 and brought together in this volume.
