Published now, at a time when the discourse on gender and sexual orientation is evolving, The Other Side traces part of the history of a reality that now gains new visibility. The first photographs in the book date back to the 1970s, when Goldin lived in Boston with a group of drag queens and documented their glamour and vulnerability. In the early 1980s, Goldin chronicled the lives of transgender friends in New York when AIDS was beginning to decimate his community. In the 1990s, he photographed the explosion of drag as a social phenomenon, capturing the real lives of the protagonists outside the scenes. Goldin's new photographs are intimate portraits, imbued with tenderness, of some of his closest friends. The Other Side is his homage to the ‘queens' he has loved, many of whom he has lost, over the past four decades.
