From this dazzling intuition, noted down by Max Frisch in Stiller, to the recent sea storm that hit the Adriatic coast, making us suddenly discover that 30 or 40 km of coastline, devastated by tourism and speculation, are a pure desert without shelter: between these two illuminations there is a thread of thought that, if developed, leads us to see the desert on the threshold of every inhabited place, and also leads us to see the illusory character of any domestication of the planet [...].
In the writers and photographers that we present here, the desert is this path, the path of silence, the celebration of the small oasis, the discovery of some glimmering, or blinding, or moving mythical trace, a flower, an animal, a stone, in the indifferent planetary desert - what in any case, in our languages, is called Nature".
