In 1909, together with Boccioni, Russolo and Marinetti, he drafted the Futurist Manifesto in Milan; in 1916, together with De Chirico, he began painting metaphysical art; in 1919, together with Mario Broglio, he led the “Valori Plastici” group; in 1926, he joined the “Novecento” group. He was thus one of the leading figures in Italian art in the first and second quarters of the century, maintaining in every phase an aspiration to classical balance that reveals the direction he took after 1919 and which permanently sustained his prolific activity. Despite the nationalistic justifications given to his painting, critics have discovered connections with French painting even in the ‘Novecento' period, which sought to rediscover, after Impressionist pictorialism and the uncompromising avant-garde of Futurism, an explicit contact with tradition and a concrete awareness of the value of form. Although C. tackled monumental themes, he particularly favoured landscapes of austere simplicity, in which the search for volume, inspired by Cézanne, sometimes meets with unexpected echoes of 14th-century Italian painting. This issue is also reflected in C.'s work as a writer and art critic (Guerrapittura, 1915; Pittura metafisica, 1919; Giotto, 1924; Il rinnovamento delle arti in Italia, 1945. Many published and unpublished texts have been collected in Tutti gli scritti, 1978) (from treccani.it).
