This play by Witold Gombrowicz (his second work after the collection of short stories Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania [Diary from the Period of Maturation] in 1933) was first published in two consecutive issues of the monthly magazine Skamender in 1938. [Rif: Francesco Licinio Galati, Dizionario della letteratura mondiale del Novecento. Edizioni Paoline, 1980] The first edition in book form was published in 1958 with the collaboration of Tadeusz Kantor, who designed the cover and the five illustrations included in the fold-out plates. In her accompanying note, art historian Justyna Guze emphasises how this first publication of the book came at the right moment, after the events of the Hungarian revolution in October 1956.
