With the rigour of the structure of such works, Buren intended to stage what he saw as the limits of painting. In the 1980s, he abandoned painting and began working with permanent architectural installations on public spaces. These include Les Deux Plateaux at the Palais-Royal in Paris, the mosaic decoration of the ceiling of the large entrance hall of the Fabre Museum in Montpellier in 2004, and the architectural and artistic redevelopment of Piazza Verdi in La Spezia in 2010. In 1986, he participated in the Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion for the best pavilion.
