Paolo Canevari uses different materials and media such as animation, drawing, video, sculpture and installations in his artistic practice. He presents easily recognisable symbols or clichés in order to comment on concepts such as religion, urban myths of happiness or the great principles behind creation and destruction. Canevari's work is linked to a reflection on impermanence in art, the meaning of sculpture and how it relates to the contemporary social context. Since the early 1990s, the artist adopts rubber from inner tubes and tyres and the colour black as his material of choice, developing a personal language aimed at revisiting everyday life and the most intimate aspects of memory where symbols, icons, pop culture, historical representation and political awareness overlap. Between 1989 and 1990 he held his first exhibitions in New York, including his first solo show Rocks. He lives and works in New York.
