He became famous for his appearances on various BBC Radio programmes, particularly those hosted by John Peel. He wrote many books mainly for children and was for 30 years a teacher of dance, poetry, drama and music for children between the ages of 7 and 11. His works are pervaded by a humorous and surreal humour, often tinged with melancholy.
