"I must immediately warn the reader that of the 'Painting Lesson' announced by the title, no trace exists. I have never given a painting lesson because I have never taught an art that no one can believe they can learn. Nor do I believe that the following pages, having no intention of doing so, will succeed in doing so.
If the lesson therefore did not (not) take place, I must at least explain the reason for such an arbitrary, not to say abusive, title: because a lesson is given and taken, one takes it at the very moment one believes one is giving it, that is, to expound that principle which, as soon as it is enunciated, will come to decree its end.
