Leonardo Castellani was a painter, writer and above all an excellent etcher. After studying at the Accademia in Florence, he moved to Urbino, where he taught chalcography from 1930 to 1968 at the Istituto d'Arte, later becoming one of the main exponents of the Urbino school of engraving. His works have been exhibited in 56 solo and 158 group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale. Important anthological exhibitions were held in Urbino, Faenza, Klagenfurt, Milan and Rome: at the Calcografia Nazionale (1951) and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna (1996). He has illustrated numerous books by contemporary authors with his engravings.
As a writer, his most important works are 'Unframed Pages' (1946), 'Quaderni di un calcografo' (1955), 'La collina di Epson', Urbino, 1964, 'Carte sotto stampa' (1974), 'Vivere nel tuo paese' (1964). He contributed to Enrico Panunzio's 'Il Mondo', and founded and edited the magazine 'Valbona' (1957-1961).
