"Artists such as Joseph Kosuth and members of the Art & Language group—originally based in the UK, and which had dozens of artists associated with it between 1968 and 1982—wrote theoretical essays that questioned the ways in which art has conventionally acquired meaning. In some cases such texts served as the art works themselves. Conceptual artists working in New York affiliated themselves with Art & Language, including Sarah Charlesworth and Kosuth, who founded the art-theory magazine The Fox in 1975. Though it ran for only three issues from 1975–76, in its short span the magazine contained some of the sharpest art writing of the period, and articulated new modes of artistic collaboration that shifted focus away from the idea of the individual creative genius. Before long, however, differences of political approach among the members—whose politics spanned the radical left from Maoism to Anarchism—and the insistence of the art world in focusing on certain group members brought The Fox to a close. The American branch of Art & Language splintered and the roster of members decreased, but artists involved in the movement never stopped pursuing and developing Conceptual practices". Jillian Suarez.
